Checking In

If you’re lucky you have a friend that is timeless. If you don’t see each other for a long time you can just pick up where you left off. The relationship is solid and unchanging over the years. The only problem with such a friendship is you can take it for granted.

Last year I thought to myself that it’s been a VERY long time since I’ve been in contact with that timeless friend. Sure we live in different states, but it had been WAY too long so I checked in. Readers my friend had been through some serious shit including major work problems, a divorce, and the death of a parent. I was in shock. I said, “Why didn’t you call me? I would have been there for you!” And my beloved friend told me the string of problems made them feel like a failure.

Folks, my friend didn’t reach out because they didn’t want to admit to all their problems. I’m glad I checked in at last, but mad at myself for not checking in sooner. Some “friends” never call you until there’s a problem they need help with, and frankly those aren’t really friends. Sadly some friends stop calling precisely because they DO need help and have managed to convince themselves they’re not worthy of it. If you have a real friend that’s gone radio silent, I highly recommend checking in.
