The Brokenwood Mysteries
Some of you might remember how much the hubby and I like watching what we call “British People Killing Each Other”. The BBC is a treasure trove of murder mystery series and we can’t get enough – which is why we branched out to “Australian People Killing Each Other”, and now “New Zealanders Killing Each Other”.
Enter The Brokenwood Mysteries! It’s a police procedural, but Brokenwood is a very small community so it’s almost a cozy. Think Sister Boniface sans nuns. One of the things I enjoy about the series is there’s absolutely zero sexual tension between the detective and his partner. I’m all for romance but the will they/won’t they main character thing is the ticking time bomb that eventually ruins a series.
Then there’s the breathtaking scenery of course. It’s a beautiful country. I also find the writing to be good. My favorite character is the coroner who is a heavily stereotyped Russian woman that leans into the femme fatale vibes so hard that you just know some of it is a running joke for her. Trying to guess where the real woman ends and the pranking begins is half the fun of any episode.
So if you can find it (try your local PBS station) give Brokenwood a try!
