About five years ago I was asked to contribute a story to a charity anthology. I wrote a very short story which they accepted and the book was published the following year. The charity had exceeded their Kickstarter goal, so they were on the hook to produce a second anthology. I wrote a story for that one too. It was a much larger story and I believed it was one of my better works. It’s a Brothers Grimm style fairy tale, and I was very excited about it.

Then this week I thought to myself: It’s been several years gone by and that anthology has been saying next year for way too long. I loved that story and I wanted it to see the light of day. So I wrote the editor with a proposition – he could still put the story in the anthology, but I wanted to self publish it now. He agreed! So I sat down with Canva and whipped up a cover, converted the file to a format the Kindle engine would accept, and PRESTO! Within a few hours the story which had languished for years was out in the world.

I can’t tell you how satisfying it is to have freed my story. I only hope it’s not several more years before anyone downloads and reads The Tale of the Baker’s Wife.
