This week I had the sheer pleasure of reading The Glowering Woman by Diana Lee. It’s what I’d call a Sherlock Holmes adjacent story. A teen in trouble seeks out the help of Sherlock Holmes only to be turned away by Mrs. Hudson without explanation so she comes every day and sits outside the door in protest hoping to be admitted to see the great detective.

Enter another teen who is mixed race Chinese/British who is sent weekly to bring medicines to treat Holmes. Still in desperate need for help the young lady begs him to help her instead. What follows is an intricate puzzle that combines Holmes style deduction with some Chinese mysticism. The characters are well realized and the plot gallops along at a good pace.
