The National Arts Center has free concerts on the roof during the summer. A friend asked us to go see Aviva Chernick on the roof and we went in blind because a free concert with a friend is a no-lose situation. Well she was amazing! Imagine a woman with a beautiful pure voice singing in a variety of rarely heard languages like the Spanish version of Yiddish, and Aramaic. Her backup band was super too.

Afterward we folded up our lawn chairs and started walking home – only to hear another concert going on somewhere. After some looking we realized that it was taking place in the tunnel underneath the canal overpass we were standing on. It has a broad sidewalk so we opened the chairs back up and listened to another great band! The hubby did some searching online and discovered it was a local band we’d already heard before and liked called OK Naledi.

Two free concerts on the same night half a block apart. Hard to beat that, right?
